Is Marijuana and Opium medicines?

I watched a programme on History Channel claiming marijuana and opium as medicines from ancient times. I collected more information about it and found that in many countries these substances were used as medicines for thousands of years and still they are in use. But America banned it because they didn't know it's medical use and thought these are narcotic substances. However they allowed the use of Wine,Beer and Alcohol simply because western civilizations drink wine, beer and alcohol. America also forced other countries to ban marijuana and opium by making changes in International Laws. However they were never successful in that and now in many US States use of marijuana is allowed to a limited extent. Police allow you to have certain quantity (50 or 20 grams) and you can't be convicted for that. However production, distribution or trafficking of marijuana is illegal. The programme said that sooner or later the Federal Government will lift a ban on marijuana. In Netherlands anyone above 18 years of age can go to a Coffee shop and have a limited quantity of marijuana. It in fact reduced illegal drug trafficking and crimes related to that. It also saved time, money and energy wasted otherwise by Police and Courts on stopping the use of marijuana. In Jamaica though legally there is a ban on marijuana people consume it openly. In fact it is in their culture. 50 years ago it was common to consume opium as a sleep medicine all over the world. There were opium fields in India and China. And in Afghanistan there are opium and marijuana fields even today. One of the British Viceroy to India died because of an overdose of opium.

First of all, opium is what heroin is made out of, and the chemicals work in the body in exactly the same way. It is highly addictive and dangerous and using it to help you sleep is crazy.

Marijuana is also bad for you (surprise, surprise). Its use as a medicine is a political stunt, almost all doctors that aren't directly behind having marijuana legalized as a medicine agree that for all the things marijuana claims to help, there are better, safer alternatives.

And obviously making certain drugs legal will stop illegal drug trafficking crime, if its not illegal then its not a crime! But it wont make drugs safer, and it wont stop drugs from getting into the country.

Its logical to say it will save us money, but the effect that making certain drugs legal will have on our economy in the long run is scary. American has the worst addiction problem of any country and it is well hidden by the media and politicians. Making drugs legal will not help that addiction problem it will only kill more people.

I think weed is a safer medicine than opium. And has little side effects compared to other medicines. I smoke it recreationally about once a week at the most and i find i actually get more positive effects than negative effects. The bad side effects i notice would only be getting tired the next day after taking it and slight short term memory loss for about 2-3 days after I did it. BUT this varies from person to person. And if you look at a drug danger chat on google images you will find that its less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. PEACE

A form of Opium (Opiates) are legal Rx drugs for pain. And an extract of marijuana is a legal Rx drug in Canada (it will be comming to the US soon).

I don't know if marijuana will be legal in the US.. It is congress who writes the law. They are not the brightest beacon of hope, stability or wisdom.

State laws on marijuana is superceeded by federal law making marijuana illegal.

The only place that you can smoke marijuana without arrest is in prison.

Marijuana isn't drugs. Any medicinal value from that is components could be had in pill form. this entire debate is strictly potheads needing the staggering to get intense. I want they a minimum of had the honesty to admit that.
