Sorry for your pain, but you have done what I would have suggested by contacting your doctor.

I hope he or she calls you back soon if your doctor has not called you by now.

That is actually a very good question, Gary. There is a very wide range of remedies, therapies and products thay you could lump into the "alternative" category. Many of them, especially the tried and true herbal remedies that date back hundreds and even thousands of years, can be quite effective. On the other hand there is no lack of bogus products promoted by unscrupulous people who seek to profit by lying and, worse still, preying on the fears of the sick and dying. I think there should be a special place in Hell reserved for such people and I personally have assisted the FDA and various government agencies in shutting down such scams - in one instance at the risk to my life when hired thugs were sent to silence me, death threats were posted on the internet, and I was falsely accused by those I exposed as being a child pornographer and drug dealer who sold to school kids. Lovely bunch those guys were - and I am proud to have cost them millions of dollars by exposing them. About 20 years or so ago, I became a bit concerned about my prospects for longevity when I realized that I was not going to be young and immortal forever after all. I began searching for ways to clean up my act and restore some of the years that poor dietary habits and lifestyle had likely taken away - and hopefully maybe even add a few years in the process. It has been an eye-opening journey. When I first began my journey, I was pretty mainstream. While I thought that home remedies, native remedies and herbs and such might have some benefits, but were at best less effective than real medicine and at worst dangerous. I thought that real medicine only came in brown bottles with an Rx on them and that only mainstream doctors knew how to treat and heal illness. And thus I began as quite the skeptic and accepted nothing based on hearsay or hype. But I kept an open mind, and because I did, I discovered that much of what I had been led to believe was quite the opposite of the truth. To say that my journey has been an eye-opener is an understatement. I discovered that herbal and natural healing could be very effective and that there was a very good reason why the majority of the people of the world continued to use such healing. I also discovered the mainstream deception that has suppressed and persecuted alternatives for the sake of profit, and it dismayed me greatly. Even though I have become disappointed and disillusioned with mainstream medicine, I still recognize its importance - especially in emergency care, trauma and diagnostics. And I remain a skeptic about any claim for alternatives that I cannot verify to my own satisfaction. I don't accept something as valid simply because it is natural, but neither do I automatically reject it as I once might have. If people would take the time to look at the body of my answers here instead of focusing only on areas of disagreement, they would find that I try very hard to give well thought out and detailed answers in the spirit of the questions asked and the theme of this section. At times, I recommend seeing a doctor or seeking professional mainstream help. I also regularly point out scams and duly report the spammers who post messages about them. In addition, I warn about the evils of drugs and bemoan all the drug users who frequent this section. There is a place for mainstream medicine and there is a place for nature. Finding an unbiased middle ground is not easy. I think the key is to keep an open mind and to do your homework. All the best!

I know this works, my Mom lowered her cholesterol by about 40 points in 6 weeks using this combination.

First 2 Months

Red Yeast Rice 600 mg twice a day

Odorless Garlic 600 mg once a day (Timed released)

Omega 3 fatty acids 1000mg once a day

After the first 2 months cut back to 1 Red Yeast Rice a day

I'm concerned about the "gas pain going all over your back" this could be symptons of cardiac problems, gall bladder problems, etc... Please get that checked out.

I would stop taking statins if you are having stomach pain or muscle pain. Statins inhibit the production of cholesterol in the liver. However, it also inhibits the production of other essential sompunds such as COQ 10. Co Q 10 is essential for proper muscle function.

Good article at

http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/sepp/2004/03/18/lipitor_side_effects_and_natural_remedy.htm

Earlier this year, I had a friend that retired from work because her memory had gotten so bad she was diagnosed as being in the early stages of dementia. When I went to visit her, she complained of muscle pain and said she had to prop her arm up against the wall in the shower to wash her hair. Her arms were too weak to hold up that long. I questioned her about her medication, badgered her to go to the doctor and come off Liptor and replace it with the herbs above. Eight months later, her muscle pain and weakness are gone and her brain fog has lifted. PS ..her cholesterol is lower than on Lipitor.

Also, eat fruits and veggies high in fiber or take a fiber supplement, Fiber bonds with fat and helps sweep it from your body.

Please take action.

Good Luck!

That's actually a tough question to answer for a few reasons.

For an alternative prescription, you need to ask your doctor (which the others said), but any prescription drug will have side effects... hopefully they'll have less side effects than the Lipitor you're on now.

Since you're asking in "Alternative Medicine", I'll also evaluate the other options that are a little more tough to answer. With natural supplements (mostly herbs for cholesterol health), they can't claim to replace any drug because of FDA regulations, plus different people respond differently to different supplements.

That being said, the most popular natural products for cholesterol health are Red Yeast Rice, Policosanol, Beta Glucans, Garlic, Phosphatidylcholine, Lecithin, Gugul, Beta Sitosterol (among other plant sterols), and Pantethine.

One thing to note about Red Yeast Rice is that it has naturally occurring statins, so if the stomach pain was an allergic reaction to the statins in Lipitor (which is an unusual reaction), you may have the same reaction to the Red Yeast Rice. Aside from that, those are the most popular products for cholesterol health (in basic order of popularity).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I believe I've answered this, there are a great many other cholesterol lowering medications available, just ask your doctor for a different one.

There are a few products you can take instead of taking lipitor. We use all of them in a treatment plan we put together called "Heart Treatment" I will post the link below so you can read all the information on it and if you click on each of the products that are in the treatment plan, you will be able to read all of their information as well as dosages. I will also post the "contact us" link if you would have any other questions.

Believe me when I say these herbs are powerful and potent! They improve circulation, clean out veins and arteries, mend and repair heart, valve, vein and arteries and promote a strong healty heart and circulatory system.

There is one other product that I would add to the Heart Treatment, it's called Black Seed. I will also post the link for that so you can read up about it.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL MEDICINE THEN YOU WANT TO USE MANGOSTEEN JUICE. THERE HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH. IT CONTAINS XANTHONES- A HIGHLY CHARGED PHYTO-NUTRIENT THAT HAS BEEN COMPARED TO LIPITOR. I HAVE SEEN OVERWEIGHT HIGH CHOLESTEROL, DIABETICS GO FROM SEVERE PROBLEMS TAKING LOTS OF MEDS TO TAKING NO MEDS, NO CHOLESTEROL PROBLEMS AND LOOSING 108 POUNDS. MY MOTHER USED TO TAKE LIPITOR ALSO AND NOW ALL SHE TAKES IS THIS JUICE. CHECK OUT THE RESEARCH AND HEAR FROM THE DOCTORS ON THESE SITES. AS ALWAYS TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR, BUT IN MY OPINION WHY USE SOMETHING THAT HAS SIDE EFFECTS WHEN THERE IS SOMETHING OUT THERE WITHOUT THE SIDE EFFECTS THAT IS JUST AS POWERFUL OR EVEN MORE POWERFUL THAN MEDS. GOD BLESS...

You can use other anti-lipidemic drugs with generic names ending in 'statin' like simvastatin, atrovastatin, pravastatin, lovastatin. But it is still best to ask your doctor which will suit you best because, although they basically function the same way, formulations may have diffirent side effects.

Lol im not doc but i think you should stop taking Lipitor. Think about it why would you put something artificial in your body, especially something that goes throughout your body. I think you should stop taking it and see a doc fast. I would not risk taking meds to stop the pain or help with the poo problem cuz you dont know what will happen. But drink alot of water help purify your body. Are you cutting your self down on food. May be you dont have enough food in your stomic to stop the diarrhea happening, like drinking to much fluids. Eat or drink some fiber stuff to help flush your system out. As for food eat lean meat and alot of vegis and fruits. I say lean meat cuz red meat is harder to brake down. Umm this is all i can think of. This is what i would do for myself but as i said im am no doc. so you dont have to take my advice. Sry for your pain too.

Umm if you still want to take Lipitor or smothing of the same. Id suggest something off the counter like Hidroxycut or Lipo 6. The reason you may be staying up is because some diet pills have (dont know the right terminology) ingredients that accelerates the metabolisms, blood follow, digestion, and some may affect your body so drastically because its like drinking to much coffee, its giving your body to much energy to burn off, and since your doing it at night your not working out. Im thinking that what you need to do is work outs such as jogging something cardio. Jumping rope, running, using the bike or something. This will also help relieve you from your jumpiness and help with apatite and water, which will help with eh diarrhea problem. I used to take Lipo 6 my body was not used to it and i got really really hyper during class, I could not stop moving and when i talked it was faster then what i could think, but then i crashed lol. I needed to start with half the dosage to adjust to the change.

I didnt see anyone recommend CoQ10. Lipitor and any other "statin" would deplete CoQ10 in your body. I would definitely take at least 100mg of CoQ10 with whatever you choose, whether it be a natural statin or a different statin drug besides lipitor.

Magnesium for calming and perhaps pain, Taurine for relaxing (Magnesium Taurate), Fish oils with a high level of EPA & DHA content for good cholesterol production, and Grape as a circulatory janitor cleaning the blood system of bad fats and free radicals, can be helpful. You could take grape seed in a pill or drink a glass of sweet, red wine each night.

Also, Bioflavonoids like Hesperidin and Rutin can strengthen vein, capillary and artery walls.

Lipitor is deadly in my book. Besides damaging the cardiovascular system, it can severely damage the brain, There is a most popular side effect of Lipitor popping up now called a "Lipitor Moment", it's like amnesia, people lose their short term memory and get confused. That's super scary if you ask me.

The best and cheapest alternative for Lipitor is doing regular physical exercises.
